Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
A surreal apocalyptic comedy starring Steve Carell and Kiera Knightley

So, the world is ending. In a month. And Dodge's wife has decided this is a great opportunity to
leave him. What should he do now? Well, of course now is the perfect
time for Penny (Kiera Knightley) to stroll in through his, um...
kitchen window. (Itchy was overwhelmed with the poetic nature of one of
the first sentences she utters to him: "I won't steal anything if you
won't rape me." Ah, the romance was alive early.)
We follow Dodge (Steve Carell) and Penny on their journey through their last month on the planet, from diners full of people on drugs and ready for an orgy, to parties where kids are encouraged to drink ("Fight through the burn!") and middle-class adults experiment with drugs for the first time. (In no other film have we heard such choice quotes as "I wanna do heroin to Radiohead!" and "The apocalypse has really levelled the playing field!" - but now we have, and we love it. Lorene Scafaria, writer and director, we salute you.) Nothing really matters anymore. Or does it?
The whole scenario made us think about what the end of the world would be like - would we all go around letting off fireworks at close range, shagging everything we saw and eating/drinking ourselves to an early death? In the same way that similarly apocalyptic film Deep Impact caused Itchy to question our morals all those years ago, this film had us thinking about how we'd spend our last month. Some characters in the film just keep going - cleaning Dodge's flat or working at the diner - others take time to see family, others just go on a massive riot and start burning/hitting/stealing stuff... Itchy isn't sure what we'd do. We reckon that when the news come, we will know what's right. (Whatever we end up doing, it will definitely involve a massive end-of-the-world chocolate cake.)
We'd recommend seeing this film, if only to start thinking about your own end-of-the-world plans - okay, so some of the plot points may seem a little convenient and some of the relationships a little unbelievable, but the altogether it makes for an uplifting, surreal comedy... what more could you want for 100 minutes of entertainment? Oh, and Adam Brody (aka Seth from the OC) makes a brilliant yet brief appearance as Penny's boyfriend. If that doesn't make you want to see it, nothing will.
