Cay Tre

One of Itchy's favourite parts of dining at Cay Tre is watching late arrivals (read after 7.30 on busy nights) queuing down the street for a table, while feeling slightly smug for bagging a table ourselves. Old Street's busiest, best Vietnamese is light and bright, with multi-coloured lightbulbs and see-through plastic stools. The menu is fairly huge but not bewildering; don't miss the delicate fish dishes, or the shaking beef for meat fanciers. We can't in all honesty recommend the wine, but the mixed crowd of skinny-jeans trendsters and city types didn't seem to mind. It's noisy and pacy, but the food was good enough to plunge our table into silence.
