Bistro 190 @ The Gore Hotel

Seeped in history, with an enviable location on Queen's Gate, The Gore Hotel is a real treat. It's beautiful interior, decked out in opulent period finery exudes a bygone era – but one that has made a seamless transition into the 21st century.

Bistro 190, the Gore's all-day eatery, is a real surprise. Stepping into the dining room, you are greeted with grand proportions; walls decked out with tasteful pictures and gilt mirrors.

But it's not gaudy; it's not stuffy ...it's natural. The young family eating at the table next to us confirms this.

Needless to say, the menu is as impressive as the décor. The wine-list has a selection to suit all palates – and budgets (oh, how we were tempted by the 75' Chateau Lafite).

The food is best described as hearty, rich ...bistro. Steak tartare, followed by duck breast in port and calvados gives you some idea of what your waistline can expect to be treated to. Finished off with a stunning strawberry cheesecake, far removed from any gelatin-based offering you might be accustomed to, we were surely not worthy!

It's not budget food, but why should it be? Bistro 190 is quality, taste and understatement to a tee. PD
