Foyles

These are tough times for independent booksellers, and all too often the delectable smell of new books is marred by the stench of corporate carpet. One in the eye for the papery empires, Foyles proves that an indie bookstore can also be huge, comprehensive and riotously successful. It recently celebrated its centenary with a £4 million modernisation scheme, but still stocks distinctly secondhand books, sheet music and rare or out-of-print editions. Top-notch café fodder is served in the café, and live jazz regularly drowns out the clatter of plates and whirr of the coffee machine.
