Applecart 2012

It's only two, but it sure packs a punch.

Preview

One of the few festivals to host a genuine cabaret stage, Applecart is only two this year but it's already gained enough momentum to sweep the average passer-by off their feet. The Sunday festival kicks off at 11am at Victoria Park on June 3 and continues long into the night...

They really do have a cabaret stage, with raw talent, real legends and alternative brilliance, all directed by Rude Grrl, the people behind The LipSinkers, UnderConstruction and Bistrotheque's legendary cabaret room. There's also a totally insane art car boot fair that looks a little like a fleet of cars that have driven through a glue factory then a bric a brac shop...

On top of this there's a stage entirely hosted by The Magic Circle and comedy from the cream of TV panel shows, including Josh Widdicombe (Itchy has seen live and approves), Miles Jupp - Balamory star and general posh boy - and the legends that are Phil Jupitus and Rich Hall. Itchy doesn't know how to fit it all into one afternoon but there's the Venn Street market with cotton candy, empanadas and hog roasts to squeeze in somewhere.

And all that is before we've even got to the music...

There's Billy Bragg, Penguin Cafe, Martin Creed, Stornoway and Itchy has saved some of the best til last... Noah and the Whale. So wander around, enjoy it all and catch as much as possible in the day you have, btu first you have to head over to the Applecart site to buy a £33 ticket. Or, if you know how to talk your friends into getting up before midday on a Sunday then buy 6 and get the last free...

The music is complete genius for a (hopefully) hot and summery day in June and a pretty damn good to spend the afternoon, bearing in mind you won't have to get up for work the next day... It's got a little bit of everything and it's going to be difficult finding a grumpy person in all that upbeat fun. All in all, there are plenty of worse ways to spend the weekend.

Children under 12 are free, but must be registered, alcohol is banned and re-admittance after you've left is not possible so wait until the whole day winds down before heading to the pub!
