When Itchy's looking for a hostel in a new place, we want a) cheap prices, b) a cool location, c) an amazing building, d) great reviews and e) an all round wicked place to stay. So, based on our requirements we’ve found you the best London accommodation to suit all categories. All five picks are based in London zone 1 and 2, so with the help of the fabulous London Underground you’ll only ever be a short journey from all the big London sights.

Cheapest
The Phoenix Hostel London is one of the cheapest in London. The hostel is located on the edge of Regents Park just around the corner from Madame Tussauds and the London Zoo. It’s also close to the famous Baker Street where you can enjoy the Sherlock Holmes Museum and make the most of the cafés, bars and restaurants that line the streets. Stay here and you’ll be just a short bus ride into the centre of London, or pack your walking shoes and it’s just a 15-minute stroll.

Cool location
St Christopher’s Inn – Camden is in one of the coolest places in the world. Camden's one of the best places to enjoy the alternative London nightlife and the hostel is located right on the main strip between Camden Town tube and Mornington Crescent. There’s a Belushi’s Bar downstairs where you’ll get a residents discount and you’ll also be just a short walk from the Camden Lock and markets. Regents Park isn’t far at all and hop on the 29 bus and you can be in the centre of London within 10 minutes.

Amazing building
If you fancy somewhere with a bit of history, Palmers Lodge is the former home of Samuel Palmer of Huntley and Palmers Biscuit Empire. Inside, the hostel has been beautifully refurbished with dark oak panelling and sturdy bunks with privacy curtains. There’s a cosy bar downstairs and a lounge area with a Nintendo Wii, TV and Wi-Fi access. Guests can enjoy a free breakfast and for all other meals the hostel offers good value home-cooked dishes in their restaurant. Just a few minutes from the tube station, Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill and St John’s Wood are also a short walk away.

Great reviews
YHA Central London is in the city’s West End neighbourhood. A few minutes north and you’ll hit the lovely Regent’s Park complete with boating lake, deckchairs and bandstand. Head south and you’ve some fantastic restaurants, the shops of Oxford Street and great boutiques around Covent Garden. Back at the hostel everything is new and the place is equipped with all the mod cons including personal lockers, luggage storage and internet. There’s also a bar and cafe for snacks and drinks at the end of a busy day sightseeing.

All round wicked place to stay
Located in Kings Cross and in an old courtroom and jail, Clink78 is in perfect proximity to beautiful Angel. This area of town is more manageable for shopping – with the N1 Shopping Centre housing many of home and fashion stores and the boutique-style Camden passage for more unique pieces. You’ve also got the Carling Academy nearby, Scala and the Lexington. The hostel offers a free city tour and plenty of events such as themed parties, quiz nights and gigs too. (Itchy also loves the room design - just cos it's a hostel doesn't mean it can't also be stylish. Win.) You’ll get free Wi-Fi and be close to six different tube lines to get to the rest of the city too - get in!
