Casual Violence @ Leicester Square Theatre

Watch out for the Poppy Man.

Review

Itchy popped to Leicester Square Theatre to set our eyes on comedy troupe ‘Casual Violence’ - the self-proclaimed "UK's most physically attractive award-winning comedy troupe". The show wasn’t due to start for a few minutes so we hot footed it to the pub and downed a cider or two. Casual Violence are currently gallivanting around London venues, perfecting their show for the Edinburgh Festival. Happy to be guinea pigs, we stumbled into the theatre around 7pm. When I say theatre, imagine the dark drama studio at your secondary school and that would be more accurate. No stalls for us, unless you count the bar stools we perched on. Enough about the venue, more about the show: there were a couple of support acts, one hilarious guy obsessed with Vikings, and one atrocious woman who was not in the less bit funny. A shame really because we are always ready and waiting to dispel the stereotype of terrible women comedians.

As for the lads themselves, Casual Violence’s hour long show consisted of a series of sketches and silly songs, directed by James Hamilton. The longer ones were broken up into parts, the shorter ones used as breaks. Itchy won’t ruin it with any spoilers for you here, but let’s just say you better watch out for the Poppy Man. Accompanied by keyboard, we really felt drawn in to each scenario. There was a mad scientist, a human puppet and puppeteer, and a serenade for a girl on the front row. The humour was dark, sometimes deranged but always dead on. Itchy could tell that this was a well rehearsed piece of entertainment, so if you enjoy rather odd occurrences you can catch the lads performing at their next show on June 1st at Laugh Out Loud in Camden.
