Museums at Night - this weekend

Ever wondered what goes on after lights out?

Ever wondered what happens to the artefacts in a museum at night? Imagine it might be a bit like "A Night at the Museum"? Itchy's not sure you can guarantee speaking dinosaurs, but there are some other pretty cool things going on after lights out. Here is our pick of the weekend's events across Britain - from London to Glasgow.

LIVERPOOL
Augmented Reality Dance Party (also as part of Light Night Liverpool 2012)
18 May 2012
Self-proclaimed 'Famous New Media Artist' Jeremy Bailey will be creating an "outdoor augmented reality dance party" - a piece of software which links an interface for expression with an interface for control. To play music - and therefore dance - revellers will need to co-ordinate themselves and literally become a 'dancing machine'. Itchy's mind is completely boggled. Apparently, by dancing "properly" they will be able to unlock creative bonuses that will let them do things like paint in 3D and create augmented reality sculptures... which leads us to ask, how does one dance "properly"? We might have to go along to find out... To get involved, take your dancing shoes along to Ropewalks Square (in front of the FACT entrance, Bold Street) from 7pm - it's free!

LONDON
Design Museum at Bedtime
18 May 2012
Join Double Decker at the Design Museum for an inspiring evening of film, visual spectacle, music and workshops that will stimulate all your senses and make you forget reality. Cinderella wannabes will love the illustration workshop, while music snobs will enjoy a VJ (yup, video jockey - a thing of the future) and DJ alongside screenings of fashion films and the new Christian Louboutin exhibition. Admission is £11 (£6 concessions) and the event takes place from 8-11pm.

MANCHESTER
A Doctor Who Adventure sleepover
18 May 2012
If you're a bit of a Doctor Who addict, Itchy dares you to resist this one. John Rylands Library will become a hub of Doctor Who activity for an overnight sleepover. Visitors will be able to watch two classic Doctor Who episodes - Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead - then take part in workshops and enjoy a torchlit tour of the library before sleeping in the Historic Reading Room. You can even win a prize for the best Doctor Who costume on the night. Email to book.

GLASGOW
The Elation
19 May 2012
St Mungo Museum of Religious Art and Life will be transformed from its daytime front to host an evening of dance, spoken word, live percussion, choirs and shared elation. Billed as "an immersive, theatrical experience involving a DJ, choir, local collective, music, smells, bells, drums and dance" - Itchy is intruiged. Seeing as it's free, why not pop down between 8-10pm to see what on earth is going on?

LONDON
A Night in Space
19 May 2012
The Astronomy Centre at the Royal Observatory Greenwich will be open from 5 - 8.30pm for a range of workshops and talks with top astronomers. Build a Moon Dial and find out why the Moon changes its appearance from night to night; meet some astronomers, find out about their research and ask them questions; enjoy their 'Space is Big...' talk exploring how scientists measure distances in space; and see spectacular planetarium shows 'Across the Universe' and 'The Sky Tonight Live' guided by an expert astronomer. All talks and workshops are free, except Planetarium Shows which have normal admission charges.
