David Shrigley's Brain Activity at The Hayward Gallery

Please let him rule the world.

Review

If you like David Shrigley's iconic postcard collection, then you will love his exhibition at The Hayward Gallery.

Itchy recommends popping down and taking a look - it runs until May - especially if you've ever wanted to know quite how many toenail clippings one man can amass in a glass bowl over five years.

It's great to see Shrigley's ridiculous sense of humour portrayed in different mediums - from a giant cup of tea to a well hidden home-made snake toy, via animations, photographs and drawings - across one floor of the gallery.

Spanning from the beginning of his career in the mid-1990s to his most recent works, the exhibition covers a range of subjects including "Misshapen Things" and "Headlessness", applying Shrigley's unique brand of humour throughout. We think it might be the first time we've ever laughed out loud at art in a gallery setting.

NB: At this point may we add that we're not sure if the exhibition will be to absolutely everybody's tastes... perhaps not the best place to take visiting Auntie Mildred for the afternoon. (But you never know, she might enjoy the aptly-titled "Stick figures having sex on a car hood". Just sayin'.)

We loved that the exhibition extended to an audio installation in the lift and out in the foyer. We also noticed that there's a David Shrigley "sort of opera" on at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in May, along with some billboards and projections planned across London in the coming months... world domination seems just a step away. And you know what? We'd be quite happy to live in a world run by David Shrigley.

He suggested that his work "looks like it's made by somebody whom you wouldn't want to meet" - Itchy's got to be honest here: we'd actually jump at the chance to meet him. We think he's just our kind of guy.

David Shrigley's Brain Activity, Hayward Gallery 1 February - 13 May 2012.
