Last Night A Speed Date Saved My Life is a twice monthly event at The Book Club offering singletons from London the chance date one another for 3 minutes in the hope of finding "The One".

Itchy has always wanted to try speed dating but felt that admitting that would seem a bit sad, so we were embarrassingly excited to have a journalistic excuse to try it. We decided the appropriate dress code would be smart casual so ended up in a 1950s playsuit and really overdid it…oops.

We grabbed a companion of the opposite sex for moral support and spent an hour before the event stocking up on dutch courage and laughing nervously about worst case scenarios… Turns out we shouldn’t have worried! As soon as we turned up at the Book Club, met the lovely organisers Jolene and Liat, and saw the attractive (and normal looking) selection of singletons, all anxieties were dispelled.

We had a little time to mingle before the dating began, and then it was ladies to their chairs! Itchy bagged the sofa, which meant our dates had to sit next to us, instead of the standard interview across a table stance – sneaky, eh?

There were 23 men in all and every single one of them was great to chat to. Conversation flowed really easily, and it was only rarely that the gong sounded to move on and there was nothing left to say. There was real variety of guys with all sorts of jobs, ranging from teachers to security guards via risk assessors and graphic designers.

All of them were good looking (shallow but you were wondering weren’t you?) and so were all the ladies with whom Itchy shared conspiratorial chats and swapped chocolate celebrations. Highpoint would be finding out one of the guys lived in the same building as us and low point would be the offer of a guy to teach us how to play Call of Duty – romantic much?

At the end of the night we handed in the names of the people we would like to contact again. Itchy put down 5 names but now can’t remember who they all were… always been a terrible note keeper!

We would absolutely go again (perhaps not in a playsuit). Remember, kids: Speed dating isn't scary because everyone is on his or her best behaviour - they just want to get to know you. Everyone is there for the same reason… we’re all looking for someone. If you think about it, how cool is that? And hey… you may just find "The One".
