How To Avoid Valentine's Day

Some tips on steering clear of Valentine's day if you are single or have recently broken up with your other half (or if you just don't bloody like it).

Feature

Even if you have somebody to love Valentine's day can induce waves of nausea. Red roses remind us of the eighties. Those boxes of chocolates are never as good as a bar of Dairy Milk. You can't eat out for fear of asparagus and strawberry heavy set menus. Basically, it's best to pretend that it's just another day. We suggest holing yourself up in your house and doing the following.

1) Watch a film. Not Notting Hill or anything involving Meg Ryan. We're thinking War of the Roses, or maybe The Shining. (500) Days of Summer counts too. If you feel the need to escape the house go to the cinema for Blue Valentine. Just do your best to avoid soppy stuff on the way.

2) Listen to a break-up album. They may be about love, technically, but there's nothing like the sound of heartbreak to put you off your oysters and champagne cocktails. Have a look at our five favourites here.

3) Drink a lot of beer. Cocktails are kind of romantic. Wine is definitely romantic. But beer is for football fans and binge-drinking students. For an especially classless beer related activity, try a round of centurion (with a bucket to hand).

4) Host a dinner party. Do not invite any couples. Do not light any candles. Drink jaegerbombs. Eat McDonald's.

5) Because beer, jaegerbombs and Maccy D's do not a productive hangover day make, get thee a boxset. Mad Men involves very few happy couples. Green Wing's characters are pretty darn unlucky in love (particularly in season 1). Six Feet Under couldn't be less perky if it tried.
