Matthew & The Atlas

Yes, we know, we're obsessed

Review

We have waxed lyrical about their lovely contribution to the (also) lovely Communion compilation album. We have sung the praises of the new EP in a way that could barely live up to Matthew Hegarty's rich, flawless voice. And now we're going to tell you that they're even better live.

Itchy dragged our asses up Pentonville Road to the Lexington to enjoy the almost hypnotisingly enchanting Elena Tonra, The Mariner's Children and Matthew & The Atlas. Of course all this gorgeous weather is making our evenings eight percent more atmospheric as standard, and a glass of wine or two didn't hurt either, but we were honestly transfixed by how great this guy is. Our only complaint is that there's not more.

Actually, we have another complaint. We normally pride ourselves on knowing a lot about musical instruments, and particularly enjoy smugly naming obscure ones in front of our more uncultured friends. But this lot out-instrumented us. Sob. But we'll get over it.

So, in a nutshell, Matthew & The Atlas have wonderfully magical songs, a hugely talented front man backed by a remarkably proficient band (who can play many instruments) and are better live than recorded. But buy the EP anyway so that they get bigger and we can go and see them again.
