Old Red Lion Theatre

Itchy enjoys nothing more than stripping things back to basics, particularly when it comes to theatre. So, we were intrigued to hear about the Bare Bones Nights soon to be playing at the Old Red Lion Theatre in Islington.

Bare Bones Nights is a new bi-monthly showcase of original short plays chosen by up and coming directors. Six directors, already making names for themselves as the bright young stars of tomorrow's theatre scene, each select an original play. They must then rehearse the play to performance-ready standard with professional actors using only the 'bare bones' necessary - essential props, costume and set - in 2 weeks. This is fringe theatre in its rawest sense.

Bar Bones The process is overseen by producer Rebecca Adamson. She ensures the directors meet regularly in the months prior to the night to share ideas, overcome stumbling blocks and gain valuable skills from each other.

Rebecca says, Bare Bones Nights is an answer to the challenge new directors face in getting their work seen on stage in London. It's so hard to find the space, funding and industry network needed to put on a full play right now. The opportunity to not only choose a script but to have the support network of the other directors involved is invaluable.“

Bare Bones Theatre For the first performance in January, Bare Bones Nights is collaborating with local award winning theatre group, Islington Community Theatre for one of the evening's pieces. Director Ned Glasier will work with young actors on a new play by Adam Barnard.

As well as the new directors this is a showcase for new writing talent. Writers submit scripts by a given deadline, and the scripts are forwarded to the six directors to select which play they would like to develop.

”It's an exciting way“ continues Rebecca ”not only for the directors and writers to have their work shown to the public in a central London venue but also to forge new working relationships, ones that I hope will last for a long time to come.“
